Canisius College is a private Roman Catholic college in Buffalo, which is the second most populated city in the US state of New York, after New York City, having a population estimated at a number of more than 292 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Buffalo is the county seat of Erie County and the principal city of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area.
Canisius College, more commonly referred to as simply Canisius, was founded in 1870 by members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) from Germany, and it got its name from St. Peter Canisius, being one of 28 institutions in the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Canisius consists of 3 schools - College of Arts and Sciences, Wehle School of Business and School of Education and Human Services – through which it offers its students more than 70 majors, minors and special programs.
Canisius’ athletic teams are known as the Golden Griffins, who are composed of 16 teams, which compete in the NCAA Division I and are members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for most sports, except ice hockey, in which they compete in Atlantic Hockey. The most popular teams at the College are the men’s basketball and hockey teams, followed by the softball team, who recently won the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament, which was the team’s 3rd consecutive title win, marking their 11th trip to the NCAA tournament in the last 15 years.
